But it would make a good Stage 2 if funds were available (I'd be doing other networks first eg Greater Dandenong before giving the Bentleigh area seconds). But it would give Carnegie a decent train feeder from the south which it needs.

Tom - re swapping that would require keeping 627 so is a more expensive option. Unless it was a variant of the first option and foregoing the benefits of the single good route down East Boundary Rd. They're too good to pass up.

Both - re Brighton Beach, I like the concept of extending 824 westwards. It would be a fantastic rail feeder. And good for disruptions given how trains often terminate at Moorabbin. It should get good school patronage also. But at other times of the day, at night and on weekends I'd imagine it being dead. Maybe running it up to Middle Brighton would help but it would be longer and less direct. Though it could be done as compensation for cuts that one might make if tidying up that area's underused local network (discussed previously).

If you did extend 824 westward (especially to Middle Brighton) I'm tempted to scrap 811/812 west of Moorabbin as introducing yet another east-west route is overkill in an area with poor demographics for buses. 811/812 does provide a one-seat ride to Southland and schools at Mentone (though it's indirect). But its frequency and legibility are poor. Removing 811/812 takes buses off Roslyn St. My ideas before have buses up Hampton St which is close. But not to the same destinatins. It would also likely need to be done in conjunction with 823 to Elsternwick and something to replace it for Dendy St (I suggested 701). None of these are likely to be a Useful Network frequency.

So to summarise, there's an area around Brighton and Moorabbin that needs fixing. But there's lots of implications for local routes that are messier than in other areas. But it's worth coming back to once I've looked 5 or 10 other areas first. One of those could be around Bernard St and the jobs area of Moorabbin since the local network there is a mess. Extending the 627 down to the end of Tucker Rd, to serve the Tafe, is an excellent idea.

The 824 could be extended from Moorabbin to Brighton Beach, although I suspect the 811 and 812 terminate at Middle Brighton (instead of Brighton Beach) because of greater catchment and terminus shopping demand.

I would consider diverting the 701 via Patterson station, to give most of the passengers faster access to the Frankston line (Patterson is not DDA-compliant).

Tomnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18909424.post-5582255268747810632019-06-28T21:10:03.053+10:002019-06-28T21:10:03.053+10:00Rather than scrapping the 627, could the common su...Rather than scrapping the 627, could the common suggestion to reroute it via Carnegie be taken onboard, and be combined with the 626 to create another 'useful network' corridor from Chadstone to (East) McKinnon via Princes Hwy, Koornang Rd & Tucker Rd?

Retain the 30 min peak service (combined 15 mins), downgrade both to 40 mins interpeak (combined 20 mins) but with 626 upgraded to 40 mins weekends to compensate (combined 20 mins).

The 627 could travel the full length of Tucker Rd to serve the Moorabbin Private Hospital and Holmesglen TAFE campus.

The latest instalment again highlights the lack of a useful route along South Rd between Moorabbin & Brighton Beach. Following on from the suggested Brighton/Elwood useful network a few weeks ago, one option would be to continue this route to St Kilda via the New St alignment (after operating via Brighton Beach Station).Craig Halsallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17099103426432389290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18909424.post-32153884390856303362019-06-28T09:34:17.609+10:002019-06-28T09:34:17.609+10:00Austin - Thanks. One issue with both of your proposed networks is that by making the Moorleigh deviation permanent on the 767, you remove a key connection for the 767 to Bentleigh Secondary College, one of the major generators of trips during those peak times. The 701 bus is nominally connected to the rear entrance along Chesterville Road as it currently stands and the 767 is more closely connected.

Bentleigh Secondary College includes most of Hughesdale in its "Zone" and I think connections should be maintained for students, even if it is a school-peak deviation that comes closer to the school.Austinnoreply@blogger.com
