Previously metropolitan trains in Melbourne operated a reduced service on weekdays over summer to reflect reduced commuter demand. However Connex has advised that given rising train patronage a regular timetable will run. Announcement here:

Much later, in 2013-14, a reduced summer timetable was again tried (under MTM) but it was unpopular. Reduced summer timetables have not applied in recent years though trains have often been replaced by buses due to works.
