Bicycles will be banned from being carried on peak period trains in Zone 1 from tomorrow, 1 January 2008. This is a response to increasing patronage and "was supported by Connex".
However the ban was unpopular, being regarded as an example of the government being unable to provide for fast rising train patronage. A vocal community campaign convinced minister Lynne Kosky to reverse the ban six weeks later by allowing bikes in the rear carriage of metropolitan services.
